My 2 Cents on Flying Mounts

Blizzard and Flying MountsThere’s been a lot of controversy over flying mounts lately with the latest expansion of World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor.  Yesterdays “Dev Watercooler – Flying in Draenor” or round table discussion, they say they came up with a compromise on their position on no flying in Draenor or other new expansions.

Personally I think they are heading in all the wrong direction with this statement made in that “discussion”.

In an upcoming Public Test Realm build, we will be introducing a new meta-achievement called Draenor Pathfinder. You’ll earn this achievement in Patch 6.2 by mastering the outdoor environment of Draenor—exploring Draenor’s zones, collecting 100 treasures in Draenor, completing the Draenor Loremaster and Securing Draenor achievements, and raising the three new Tanaan Jungle reputations to Revered. Initially, this achievement will award a rylak mount: the Soaring Skyterror, one of the native beasts that roam Draenor’s skies. Players will remain ground-bound on Draenor until a small follow-up patch (6.2.x), when all players who have earned Draenor Pathfinder on at least one character will unlock the ability to fly in Draenor on all their level 90+ characters.

I feel only angered people all the more and here’s my take on the whole thing.

At first it was Blizzard didn’t want to cheapen the experience for players by forcing them to explore on the ground.  So with previous expansions, you had to make max level and pay a hefty gold fee to get the privilege.  It makes sense.  But!  If the player feels cheapened after that, it’s their own fault.  They can choose not to use a flying mount.  Simple as that.

Now they want you to do a number of things in order to get the privilege.  Which will likely be on top of paying gold and being max level.  To this I say, “Hold the fuck on there Hoss!”.

Firstly, over the past five years or so, I’ve invested a few hundred dollars in flying mounts alone.  Either through paying $25 each via the Blizzard Shop, or through purchasing the higher priced deluxe expansion packs.  Warlords of Draenor Deluxe came with a flying mount.  Yet, I can’t use it in Draenor.  Does anyone else think that’s just fucked up?  It is one thing to make me wait until I make max level and pay a fee to fly in a zone.  It’s another thing entirely to tell me that even though I’ve ponied up the dough or busted my hump repeatedly in a dungeon that now I must go through a rite of passage and grind my ass off to use them in your new zone?  I don’t think so Chumley.

One commenter had a great idea though.  I wish I could find it again and quote it.  Essentially, just like having PvP, PvE and RP servers.  Only have flying on certain servers as well.  This way those who don’t want flying can have it and those who do can.  Providing it’s not much code to change.

For me, flying is why I stay with WoW.  I have 175 mounts.  Most of which fly.  I love to explore new and old content flying.  It’s a great time saver, even over flight points.  As they have some sort of tour mode that makes the mount do circles and fly through areas somewhat out of the way.  Hell, I could fly for hours.  It’s cheaper than owning a real plane and there’s less garbage to look at on the ground.  (we are a really lazy race when it comes to keeping our planet clean)

I told Blizzard yesterday the same thing when I filled out their form for turning off my subscription.  I also added,

You may want to put a book or two under that leg in your “Round Table”.  It seems crooked.

Although my account is paid up until October.  (Thanks Jeff!)  So perhaps something will change.  However, I only see it getting worse from my perspective.  Maybe it’s time I finally move on for good.  (I know I have trouble doing that.)
