Even good guys cause pain…

I checked into the Mary Immaculate hospital again this past Wednesday to have 2 more stents put into the artery’s of my heart in order to prolong my life after my recent heart attacks.  However, that had to be the absolute most painful medical visit I have ever experienced.  I also learned that even though people claim Morphine is a wonder drug for pain, not everyone would agree.  As I can tell you it didn’t do squat at all for me.  The first time I went in for a stent, it was much easier as they went through my wrist, much less painful and they gave me Dilaudid, for pain afterwards and it worked wonders.

The reason I bring this up, as after I got to thinking about it.  There only seemed to be a few differences between what this doctor was doing to prolong my life, wasn’t a whole lot different that a psychotic killer you see in a horror movie.  The prolonged torture and pain while toying with the victim’s insides before finally becoming bored or the victim simply can’t take anymore and dies.

To give you perspective, here’s how my day went down on Wednesday.

  • 6:30am – I come in this early in hopes that the first patient may not show up and I can get in immediately.  I’m really scheduled for 9am.  I strip naked, get poked and prodded and they make me lay on a hard cold bed.  We have some laughs and then we wait.
  • 9:00am – Comes and goes.  I’ve been here for two and a half hours and this bed has me frozen and my back is getting sore.
  • 12:00pm – I haven’t eaten since 9pm the night before and word has come to me finally that the doctor is with the first patient still as there is complications.
  • 1:00pm – Turns out the first patient will need an open heart surgery to fix is issues.  I make sure the doctor gets lunch and a break before even trying to take me in as I know he and his team have already had a rough morning, I don’t wish to be problem child number two.
  • 2:00pm – I finally get brought into the procedure room.  They decide to enter my body using an artery 2 inches to the right of my balls.  They use a local anesthetic via needle.  And the torture begins.
  • 3:00pm – I can feel the wires moving up and down my body on the inside.  While trying to find the best place to insert the first stent, they end up giving me a third heart attack this month.  Which only adds to my back pain and hunger.  This continues for another hour while they put the first for today, technically the second stent in.
  • 4:00pm – I hear them talk about wrapping me up and making me come in next week for one more stent.  I groan out loud, “God! Don’t make me come in here again!”.  More wires and more clenching in my chest as they proceed to put in the third stent.
  • 4:30pm – The anesthetics are wearing off and my groin is now in major pain and I’m in tears over it.  The doctor decides that I’ve been a good boy for the most part and instead of making me lay perfectly still for 6 hours to prevent massive bleeding from where he opened me up, he puts stitches in me.  Over 2 inches deep and the anesthetics have worn off.  I start screaming in pain and crying like a little bitch as they hold me down to stitch me up.
  • 5:00pm – I get wheeled into the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) but I’m not allowed to move for 3 more hours and I’m in pain front to back.  It makes for the longest 3 hours in history as far as I was concerned.
  • 6:30pm – I get offered Morphine.  Didn’t help at all.  Just put a horrid taste in my mouth.  And people get addicted to that stuff?  Made me want to throw up.
  • 7:00pm – I get dinner.  Try eating without moving…  Try peeing without moving (no catheter!).
  • 9:00pm – I finally can move, but with the I.V. and many wires hooked up to monitor me, I can only move to shift my butt from one side to the other.  I managed to sleep for a few minutes at a time then shift and repeat.
  • 9:00am Thursday – Doc comes in, and releases me.

I could so easily replace a few key words and it would sound like I was left for dead after the torture from a psychotic killer.  I know what the doctor did will benefit me in long run.   It was just a very painful experience.  I still can’t sit for very long (which is why it took me so long to write this as it’s now Friday).

I do wish, hope, pray… That I never ever have to endure that kind of pain again.  Well…  There is still the matter of the bill to come.  That will be a torture of a monetary colour.
