Happy New Year 2012!!

Well we made it another year with out ending the world.  Will we make it another?  (I ask as my dog cowers under my desk from all the gun fire going on….)  Although as with the many, many threats of the world ending at some point.  As I recall from many years growing up, there was a lot of different times the world was predicted to end.  This coming year, blame the Mayans.

A time of year for millions of people to fool themselves by making resolutions they generally never come even close to keeping beyond February.  Pessimism?  Yes.  Experience?  Definitely.

A time of year for millions to get drunk, stupid and possibly add to their family member count.  (or begin a family – planned or unplanned)

Sadly this year (and today) has sucked badly for me.  So…  I can only look forward to next year in hopes things will get better.

Here’s to hope, love and happiness!  May it be found by everyone (and me) by the truckload!

Happy New Year!!!

and hooray for living in Redneckland… (as more guns go off….  hope like hell they are blanks…)

Majority Rules…

I give up, I concede.  I have finally succumb to using Social Networking.  As much as I’d rather not, it seems that I really have little choice if I ever want to keep in contact with folks on the net.  Even though I’ve tried over and over and over and over and over again to get folks to recognize me as I am, they simply refuse and insist that Social Networking is the ONLY way.  I guess there is no point in fighting it anymore.

Of course, because I have an unusual first name, immediately my new account gets flagged for being fraudulent.  So, that made the first experience even more painful.  As I had to submit identification to them and wait…  {sigh}  Off to a great start…  Actually this is my second attempt at Facebook.

Even threw Twitter in the mix for the hell of it.  No idea if or what that will do for me.  But hey, if Ray William Johnson can do it, I can too!

With any luck, I can start meeting new folks in my new town as well as add to my online friends and family.

OMG, what the hell is happening to me?!?! First a Mac, now Facebook and Twitter…  What will happen next!

Fine example of Dumasaphobia

There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t suffer from Dumasaphobia {dŭm’ăs-ə-fō’bē-ə} The Fear of Stupid People.  Over the years I have noted this continuing decline in our society that is a mix of lowered educational standards and technology making making the general populous lazy.  The craze of texting is also becoming a severe problem in getting people to spell simple words properly.  As well as all the near miss accidents I’ve avoided over the past few years.  Nothing like looking in the rear-view mirror at a stop light just to see someone eyes get really huge as they look up from their “smartphone” to stomp on the brake pedal prior to colliding with the rear end of my car.

Although, continually I’m told that I’m being overly hateful or cynical of the human population.  Yet here is a perfect example.  This is a payment stub I received today from a customer.  They couldn’t even do simple addition.

If they can’t do this, I can’t possibly expect them to answer very simple questions like:

  • What version of Windows or Mac are you using?
  • When you click on the start menu, do you have 1 or 2 columns?  (which is frequently met with “What’s a column?”)
  • What was the error message?

The list goes on.  Things that would normally help me, help the customer.  Now the best part is yet to come.  In 1 month they will get a bill for $5.00.  Call me up and complain to me that they made a 2 month payment and that I should check my records (and become angry with me because my records are wrong in their mind).  This will lead to my asking them for a copy of the canceled check for proof.  Once they have that then I have to show them their mathematical error.  Just so they can say “fine” in a huff and make the payment.  No thank you for finding the mistake, no I’m sorry for putting you through this trouble…

Christmas Cards 2011

Every year I make my own Christmas Cards.  This year I thought I would share the image I created (or manipulated in this case).  Yes, that is my WoW Character in the Winter clothes set.

Cool huh.

We can’t know everything…

It’s amazing how customers just automatically assume that if they call tech support, that the person they get knows everything about anything dealing with computers or technology.  First of all, customers need to think about who they are calling and what they are calling about.  If they call their Internet Service Provider (ISP), then they need to keep it related to the internet.  Even then, they need to realize if it’s really the internet or if it’s the software they choose to use on the internet.

Just today, I’ve taken two calls asking for help about things that are beyond our control.  Both times I’ve gotten the argument that I’m not being very helpful.  Which is an incorrect statement.  I tried to steer both customers to places that would provide better help than I could.  Thus, helping them help themselves.  But as always, people today are angry unappreciative twats that can’t understand that they should contact the product maker rather than a service provider.  So of course instead of appreciating the help I did give, they just hung up in a huff because I didn’t instantly satisfy them.

The first customer had a problem that when he chose to forward an email in Thunderbird, the address book would come up all wonky with unusual characters.  It’s a problem I’ve never heard of before, and we do not promote Thunderbird as a product for use with our service.  We haven’t done so in years due to the many issues customers have had with it.  I explained I’ve never heard of that before, and perhaps he could go to the software makers website and use their forums and see if there was anyone else with the problem and if so, what their solution was.  Or he could also search the internet for answers by using keywords like “Thunderbird” “Forward” “Address book” “Corrupt” or similar.  Of course, he then argued we promoted Thunderbird, and I said, “We haven’t promoted it in over 5 years and now promote Windows Live Mail.”.  I proceeded to explain that even if we did, we don’t make the product, we have no relationship with any software maker, and that he’d still have to seek support with them for such an unusual case.  If it were a common problem, perhaps we would be able to help.

The second customer, had no problems accessing the internet.  Except if she used Internet Explorer.  She proceeded to explain that it’s required for her to use it as she works from home and whatever she accesses only works via Internet Explorer.  As there is no problem with the internet, the problem is clearly on the computer users side.  Though I offered suggestions to help her out.  I offered that perhaps a security software such as Norton, or McAfee or similar may have stopped giving Internet Explorer access to the internet.  This is done through their program permissions in their own firewall.  I’ve seen this numerous times in the past.  So I suggested she check that.  I also suggested she could contact her work and see if whatever program she uses that utilizes Internet Explorer has somehow made things go wrong.  Perhaps also, she could contact a local PC repair person to take a closer look at the situation.  Perhaps Internet Explorer has been corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.  Of course she asked me to go through her security software, but unfortunately what she was using I have had no experience with.  So I was unable to help her and she got pissy with me about it.  I explained there are hundreds of security software products on the market, and no one in my office has training on anything other than what they, themselves use.  There is no way for us to know all of that, and that she needs to contact the software maker for help.  She hung up angry.

If you need help with specific product, call the product maker.  Not some third party and get pissy with them when they don’t know how to fix it.

And stop calling us about your damned printers!  Just because it’s got wireless, doesn’t mean we’ve been trained to operate your peripherals!!

So… What’s so great about Macs?

Now that my “shiny new toy” syndrome has worn off, and have had a solid 6 months to actually learn and use a Mac…  I’m seriously failing to see what is so great about them.  Granted, my budget doesn’t allow me to get an iPhone or an iPad to check out the features you get when you mix them up on the same network or using the AirDrop feature.  Still, I’m not sure that would “wow” me.  Here’s some of the reasons I say this.

Insert, Home, End, DEL, CTRL & Printscreen

As an HTML and PHP person, the Insert, Home, End and CTRL keys are an absolute must for me to get things done efficiently.  They are also very handy for playing Warcraft.  The lack of these keys frustrate me to no end.

There is a CTRL key, why the hell can’t I use it!?!  Well, I can, but it seems only if I Remote into my Windows computer or if I use terminal.  OK sure I use both on a daily basis.  But then I want to copy and paste items or text, I have to use the Command key instead.  Why not just make the CTRL key work for that too?  Seems pointless to have both keys.

The delete key is also very deceiving.  It does not work the same as a Windows machine.  If you expect it to delete, it backspaces instead.  You have to use a FN or function key to make it delete rather than backspace.  Directionally challenged are they at Apple?  Tis backwards and piss me off much it does.  Also, why a FN key?  Kind of confusing against the already present F1, F2.. etc keys.  That… you have to use the FN key to utilize as they too are set to other functions rather than F1, F2.. etc…  My head hurts just thinking about it.

Printscreen!  Dammit I want to printscreen!  Oh wait… no I need to do origami with my fingers and do SHIFT+COMMAND+3 to get a screenshot.  Oh sure, there are apps that make screenshots easier but that means I have to download and install something that is already native to the OS, but it’s causing me to develop arthritis using it.

A Software Comparative

For the most part, I’m able to use my Open Office and other programs much like I do on my Windows PC.  However, there are a few software items (such as my text/code/html editor, my web design software and photo editor) that I use daily that either are not available for Mac or their Mac counterparts are slow and/or suck.  For example, I do miracles with graphics and photos in my free Paint.net for my PC.  On Mac, I’m either faced with a bastardized version of GIMP (and I’ve always hated trying to use GIMP) or I can use Pixelmator which for the most part looks the part and has many similar features, but the learning curve makes me just say “Eff this, I’ll do it later on my PC”.  So I’ve paid $30 for a software I barely use.  Just going back to use my freeware that works wonders.  My only other choices are Pinta (that needs some serious work, but is shooting to be a Paint.net clone), or Adobe Photoshop and I sincerely think only professionals can afford it and I still believe they are bat-shit crazy to pay $700 for graphics software.  Sure it’s the shizznit.  Bring it down to $199 and I’ll jump at it.  But again, it’s like paying $1800 for a Macbook Pro when I did just fine with my $500 Sony Viao before hand.

Games

I’m a PC gamer dammit!  This Macbook Pro has just as good of hardware as I have in my desktop.  (well… save for the graphics card.  but it’s darn close!)  I can play Warcraft and some older games that were recently “ported” to Mac.  But I can’t play my newer games because software developers still aren’t on the Mac bandwagon for the most part.

Although, Mac still may be the way to go over Windows 8

I’m dreading it.  Not only from an end user standpoint but also as a tech.  I’m just waiting for customers to run out and buy a shiny new Windows 8 machine on a ARM processor type of hardware build and find that none of their software will work because they didn’t pay attention or have the knowledge to know that they needed an X86 based processor.  I don’t understand making an OS that can run on two totally different architectures when most of the software won’t.  Which in my mind, will drive more people to Macs when they get frustrated over this.  I don’t think Microsoft realizes not everyone will want to go out and buy all new software that may not even meet their needs.  So when the time comes, Mac may be the way to go.  For them at least.  However, I may be wrong in my assumptions of Windows 8, but from what I’ve gathered…. Yikes…

Patches, Security and Maintenance

After having this Mac for several months now, I don’t see how anyone can complain about Windows patches and security.  The OS and other software get updates and patches just about every week.  I check them everyday.  As I do with my Windows software and what-not.  Patches are patches and are needed to keep things secure and/or running smoothly.  Seems they are running neck and neck for patches.

Security is still something most Mac users take for granted.  They don’t understand that prevention is better than patching a known problem.  Patches only come out after something has been found to be wrong and already exploited on hundreds or even thousands of computers.  Possibly millions if patched too late.  Then that’s even if the end user has bothered to check for updates and patches.  OR if the end user even bothers installing the updates or patches.  Nothing like hearing “every time I run an update something else breaks”.  Sounds like something was already broken, and the update only made it more prevalent.  It’s not like they are pushed every few minutes like a security software would do.  With an antivirus, most use Heuristic scanning techniques and/or Sandboxing.  Heuristics basically means if it smells like a virus, or tastes like a virus or behaves like a virus, it’s a virus until proven innocent.  Sandboxing is let me see what it does virtually before I let it do what it does for real to prove it’s safe to play with.  As I’ve said before, Macs have viruses too.  And with the current growth rate, the bullseye is only getting bigger on Apple’s flagship product.  My personal opinion is if you have a Mac and don’t think you need an antivirus software, you’re an idiot.  As well, like I said previously, my Mac came with the Firewall turned off.  It should be turned on so that any known open exploit in the OS can’t be easily found by some hacker.  A firewall helps keep unwanted outside traffic at bay.  Leaving others who don’t bother to run their firewall software to be a bigger target than you.

Maintenance is something Mac users also take for granted.  I take calls from Mac users just like PC users saying “It’s running so slowly!”.  Macs make all these silly little files for what reason I’m not really sure.  But however, they build up and while I’m not an expert on Mac OS stuff, I do know that there are tools to help folks out with this.  Onyx is a tool to clear up unused silly files that build up on Macs and I can attest that it works like a charm.  I’ve also added a beta of CCleaner, the same thing I use for my PC to clear up junk files as well.  It even comes in handy for uninstalling programs.

So overall, I’m still doing just as much work to use and maintain my Mac as I do my PC’s.  As well as I only use my Macbook Pro half as much as I did my Windows based laptops, and I’m not getting much joy from it either…  So what’s the big deal?  Other than it is nice to look at, and it has solid tech support, it’s still 4x the cost of a PC.  Sure you’ve got brand style.  You probably also drink Starbucks and eat at Bonefish Grill everyday too if you can afford such a thing.  I drink brewed coffee and bring my lunch to work like most folks do.

Mechano! Mechano! Mechano Hog Ho!

The one and only reason I made my Mage an Engineer, was solely to be able to make a Mechano Hog!  (or Mekgineer’s Chopper had I stayed on the Alliance side)  I can imagine that’s probably the exact same reason 90% of other Engineers have chosen their profession.

At long, long last…  Finally after grinding the rep, farming the materials to make the gold and buy the parts needed (as well as farm them too), all the endless hours, I can finally say that I’ve attained Get to the Choppa!

Now to get started all over again to make one for my Druid, one for my Warlock and one to start selling them.  {takes a deep breath}  Here I go again!
