CCleaner comes to Mac!

It’s so nice to see the software products I know and trust for my PC’s are coming to OS X Macs.  Yes, I’m becoming quite the fanboy of something I so often complained about.  I guess it’s because I never really gave Mac a chance.  I still do not find Macs to be better than PC’s.  Sorry but I just don’t. I do find them to be a nice alternative for some folks and I think this will be a life long relationship.  Me and my Mac that is.  It’s a very nice piece of hardware.

So I use CCleaner like 5 times a day.  If I find myself on a questionable website, I can rest mostly assured that I can trash the temp data quickly and cleanly with CCleaner.  I like to keep my machine clean of trash files that build up over time.  Granted, Macs do not have a registry to deal with, but on my Windows machines it’s a god send to be able to clean up useless registry entries from all the software I download, try and then realize I don’t like the downloaded software and uninstall it.   Never fails, it leaves crap behind that CCleaner (formerly known as Crap Cleaner – hence the C), quickly and cleanly swipes it out of the machine.  Then a nice quick defrag from either Piriforms Defraggler (or the one I use by Auslogics) and my machines stay running smooth as silk.

Now that hey have it for Macs, I can keep my new baby running clean and smooth :D   I’m tellin ya folks, Macs are gaining ground quick, time to invest in some of that stock!!  I would if I could!!

What’s in a name?

Everything can be in a name.  It’s super important if you want to be taken seriously.  I can attest to this as I grew up with the name Denver.  It sucked eggs as a kid having this name.  To this day, people think they are super clever and say “Colorado”.  Look at me dude, I’ve been around this planet some time now.  You really think you’re funny?  Maybe if Jeff Dunham said it, but not the rest of the population.

When it came to make my online persona, I researched it based on medieval times, famous books and plays within the dark ages.  I came up with Theodas.  A sorcerer from a play.  I liked it and it’s been my name ever since.  It was powerful, mildly unique and worked on a number of levels both online, in-game and sometimes in real life.

However, I have created other characters who I feel in love with as far as game play and skills go.  My Druid, Theodas has been kind of put in a situation from the latest Cataclysm installment to Warcraft.  His being a Boomkin as it were, his skills are now somewhat lacking and every druid in the game is jumping ship from Boomkin to Tank, Restoration or Feral.  I like being Restoration second.  Melee play is just not for me at all.  So Theo is going on a back burner as far as my game characters go.

But what I’m really on too, is Sinderellia.  That’s not her original name.  It was Kyllia {Kill-ya}.  I started a Warlock some time ago when I was generally very alone in my CastleRain Guild on Dentarg.  Summoning demons made leveling easy and she’s rather self-sufficient.  She can recover mana and heal on her own in between battles.  The more I played her, the more I realized she’s a force that can damn near be unstoppable!  Sadly when I moved her to Scarlet Crusade last week.  Someone already had the name Kyllia.  I had to rename her.  I was tired and didn’t have a lot to go on.  So I thought, Cinderella.  Only playing on Sin as she is human, part demon and all bitch.  Of course, Sinderella and just Sin were taken as well.  No idea what made me type Sinderellia.  But unless I want to pay for a name change, I’m stuck with it.

Note: In a change of events, she’s back on Dentarg and back to being my Kyllia!

Avast! Free Antivirus for Macs!

Here’s a bit of wonderful news to add to my new Mac experience.  The antivirus I’ve been trusting heart and soul for the past 5 or so years, is now making a free version for Macs.

I have to agree with the company Avast! for their reasoning for releasing such a product.  They’ve had a Mac version for some time now but as they recognize, Mac users aren’t as safe as they are led to believe.  I, myself have read some horrific stories in just the past few weeks how users of Macs are getting their systems infected with malware or hi-jacked to spy on people in the shower as noted in these stories: Updated rogue AV installs on Macs without passwordMac tech jailed for hacking webcams to spy on women

In my opinion, this primrose path of Mac users thinking that their machines are “safe from all harm”, has been walked too far for too long as it is.

As said by Ondrej Vlcek, CTO of AVAST Software:

“It’s time for Mac users to start thinking about an antivirus app and this beta shows what they will need for their protection.  The Mac has long had a ‘cloak of invulnerability’ because its small market share made it a fringe target for malware. As Mac sales surge it is becoming a natural target for malware such as the Pinhead and Boonana Trojans or the MacDefender fake antivirus.”

OS X Lion or Windows 8?

Oh god what is happening to me?  Is my the bad things happening in my home life spinning me toward madness?  Let me explain what I mean here.  As you read before, I’m not too keen on either the new Windows 8 or OS X Lion for certain reasons.  However, I’ve spent the past two days with unexplained muscle aches and a strange fever, yet no cold or flu symptoms to speak of.  So when I wasn’t taking pain relievers and sleeping, I did some research as sitting still to play games hurt.  At least I could pop on a video and lay in bed and absorb info on the upcoming OS’s.

Before I go too much further, as an über geek and computer tech, I will be buying both Windows 8 for my current home Desktop PC and OS X Lion for my newly acquired MacBook Pro so that I can have the latest technology to better help my customers.  However, my thing here is it seems like OS X Lion may have more to offer than Windows 8.  At least for the everyday computer user.  For computer gamers, not so much.  Though, Macs seem to be gaining ground in that too.

While Windows 8 appears to be coming up with OS X like features with their new fluid movements, sorting and other capabilities…  I wasn’t necessarily wowed by the changes.  I hate the new blocks on the proposed new start screen.  Their new “Swipe” technology is meant for a touchscreen.  So if you don’t have a touchscreen, you are basically boned and seems that the features are kind of useless.  You can see the first Microsoft Video on Windows 8 below.

YouTube Preview Image

Yesterday I re-watched the Worldwide Developers Conference for Apple.  I was absolutely blown away with the upcoming features the showed off for the new OS X Lion.  Granted, I’ve always been one for saying people need to learn how to use a computer properly if they plan to own one.  Just this morning I dealt with a backwoods good old boy who just couldn’t explain anything to me, and it was a nightmare just to get him to tell me he was running Windows XP (and had been for years), let alone getting any kind of error message.  He was stuck on “it’s not workin’”.  But I digress.

Shown here below, it’s like everything I ever wanted for myself in working with my computer.  Yes OS X Lion has swiping and gestures too, but this can be done via a touchpad which comes on all MacBooks as well as they have a magic mouse or touchpads for desktops as well.  Much cheaper than buying a touchscreen, though I imagine they can do touchscreens as well.

YouTube Preview Image

Looking at it, Launchpad is handy to find any application rather than scrolling through endless drop menus in Windows start menu.  Mission Control is handy to work on multiple things at one time.  The new mail is actually useful to me.  Granted, Gmail did conversations first, but Mail 5 will present it better and make it easier to find messages.  Autosave will “save” everyone from the dreaded “I forgot to save, and now that the power has gone out I’m doomed…” feeling.  And Multi-Touch Gestures is just freaking cool!  Not too mention $29 for an OS?  That’s simply unheard of!  (Not sure if that’s just the upgrade or if that’s the full price, but either way it’s still unheard of!)

Even if none of this works out, looking at Apple as a company.  Makes me want to buy stock right now.  If only I could afford to do so.  Just looking at them in the past years.  They’ve had a 28% growth rate while PC’s have actually lost 1%.  Apple has gained substantial ground in market shares for the past few years.  Granted, this does not mean that the world is saved by OS X and life is peachy and virus free.  However, it does appear that Apple has got something going on and I think it’s time for folks to take a serious look.

Oh my god… I’m becoming a fanboy…  sort of…

New Windows 8 and OS X Lion

Just when you think they both got it just right…  Here comes new versions from both the big players in the computer operating system market.  Microsoft Windows 8 for PC’s and OS X Lion for Macs.

You’ve read/heard my praises for Windows 7 time and again.  Microsoft finally got it right, and for the majority of the populous who have used Windows for a long time or those who just got it for the first time, can easily agree it’s a great operating system.  Even some Mac users say it’s good stuff.

To top it off, I’m a new comer to OS X Snow Leopard.  Finding my way around just fine.  Learning it as quick as lightening, as they have something pretty damned solid going on.

And just as I get comfortable with both, what do I start hearing about all over?  New versions of both Windows and OS X.  What’s more, they both boast that they have features found in their smartphone versions to make it more social network friendly.  Here we go again with those nasty words…  So now I’m threatened to have social networking rammed down my throat regardless that I’m not a socialite.  I know I’m not the only one like me by a long shot, but because it’s the “popular thing”, it’s the direction they both are going too.  For folks like me, that just means more useless features that we’ll never use.  OK whatever.  For those who are socialites, this means they can be more in your face with phenomenons of brilliance such as Planking, Teapotting, and Pillaring.  Because social networking people are just so much cooler when they perform in public.

As well as they both (Windows & OS X) are starting to push the usage of the new storage phenomenon of the cloud.  Rumor has it that these services will be more closely integrated with the OS’s in question.  They advertise how you can access your files remotely, and share them easily.  I find this a little scary honestly.  I’m not a huge fan of my personal files being stored on the internet.  Encrypted or not, this just means that personal data, will more and more become totally dependent upon the internet.  Where we know identity thieves are just waiting for it.  I not crazy at all about this idea.  So, my first thought is to not use these options.  Should they be integrated in these new operating systems, then my first project is to find a way to disable or omit these features.

All the other features they promise seem pretty good.  Though I’m not too crazy about a new Windows release so soon after they finally make a good one.  Releases like that have always gone south.  Anyone remember Windows ME (Millennium) and Windows Vista? /facepalm

As for OS X, they’ve done good so far in my opinion, perhaps this will be good.

Initial Thoughts on My Mac

As you could tell by my initial post, I am now the owner of a MacBook Pro.  Yes, the post was a bit moody, but it was to convey the exact feeling I get when a self-indulgent weenie Mac owner approaches me with their sales pitch on how I should go Mac.  People who have read the post that work in my field, have already conveyed that I “hit the nail” on the proverbial “head”, as they too have felt the sting of Mac owners.

The pain has yet to subside in my wallet and I’m sure an ass chewing is soon to ensue as I don’t discuss what I do with others in my house anymore.  In any case, it’s certainly cheaper than going to school, but I can only prove my knowledge with real world answers as I won’t be a Certified Mac Genius because of the path I chose to give me said knowledge.  It’s worked well for me in the past getting a job at Gateway, but we know how that turned out.  Perhaps I can get some respect from my current employer in the form of a boost in pay or if need be, perhaps I’ll find such respect elsewhere.  That matter has yet to come to pass in any case.

Cost

This is the most important point in my opinion, especially since our economy is so close to the tank right now.  It’s the number one reason my life at home is so uncomfortable.  So buying this Mac is only going to cause me headaches of the “you bought what!?!!?” kind.  The Sony VIAO I just sold last week, was listing around $599.  I could’ve bought 3 of those total and still spent less on them than I did on the Mac.  Again, it’s for education, so it’s still less than paying for classes that for all I know, may not even exist or only be taught in Cupertino, CA as I don’t recall OS X as part of the A+ certification and certainly not part of the MCSE certification.  Though it would be super cool to be called a Certified Mac Genius.

Ease of Use

This one I’m going to flounder with describing.  I always try to look at things like a customer does.  Sadly the majority of the customers I deal with I would need to hit myself in the head with a sledgehammer to think like they do.  Though in all seriousness I do try to think like I know nothing and try to take an outside look to figure whether or not someone could figure out what I can.  Using common sense and logic (yes, I know…. don’t say it).

However, I was extremely surprised how quickly I was able to figure out 80% of what I wanted this thing to do right off the bat.  Had it hooked to the wireless first thing and was off to the races poking about and finding where my documents, pictures and other files should go and how to open and use the applications installed.  How to remove, move and add things to the dock bar.  Super simple.

I’m not sure an everyday PC user would get used to “mounting”.  Anything you plug in or CD/DVD you insert gets mounted to the OS and then you get an icon on the desktop.  You must eject it before disconnecting.  Though I have also I seen a lot of PC users just yank out their USB flash drives with out using the “safely remove” icon in the system tray.  I imagine Mac users do the same thing essentially.

I can however, see every day folks working on Macs.  Big pretty icons galore.  Oh wait… Windows Vista/7 has those too.  Setting up email wasn’t too terribly hard.  Though Mac Mail 4.5 does not do the best job of handling Gmail apparently.  I find that I have to delete things in the Inbox and All Mail separately which is annoying.  Though I recall the early versions of Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail being guilty of the same thing.  Perhaps the new OS X Lion with Mac Mail 5, (due in Summer) will also address a fix for that.

Visuals

I’m not talking about just the desktop and how pretty the big icons are.  This thing is visually stunning at every turn!  The aluminum body is sleek and sexy, the screen is shiny as far as the glass goes.  The display is awesome!  The colors are so rich and deep.  Even loading up World of Warcraft, this thing blew me away and made me mourn the fact that I just upgraded my Video card on my desktop.  It may have the speed, but it doesn’t have the depth this laptop does.  The laptops 3D graphics are nearly as fast but I can’t turn things up all the way.  Still it looks phenomenal.  Not too mention everything moves so fluidly.  In game and normal applications.  That floored me.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard is a learning curve for me.  It has control keys but you use the Command key as you would use the control key on a PC.  That’s just confusing.  So what is the control key for?  The “F” (function) Keys are not on by default.  Instead you use them for system functions like brightness and volume or media playing primarily.  Again, confusing.  Home, Insert and End are missing completely and as a website designer I use those constantly.  So programming is going to suck eggs.  The Delete key is the backspace key and there is no backspace and since delete works like the backspaced you delete in reverse and the sideways motion of the …… what the fuck?  In short I hate the layout of the keyboard and missing keys.  That’s going to take a lot to get used too.  I will say this, the auto back lighting for the keyboard when it gets in a dim environment is super cool!

The touchpad is cool and unlike my previous laptops, it doesn’t interfere with my typing.  The multi-touch is amazing, you can twist, zoom and do all sorts of gestures to get it to do what you want.  It’s not a huge feature I will ever take advantage of, but it certainly works well.

Speed

The MacBook Pro is just as fast as my desktop gaming PC.  It screams as opening up applications and games and is really a pleasure to work with as far as not having to wait long for anything at all.  It boots up just as fast which I like to keep my boot times around a minute or less.  This certainly does the same thing.

Security

I was terribly disappointed that Mac not only chooses to omit any antivirus software, but the firewall was off by default.  I get that they are less vulnerable to viruses.  Still I don’t see why they don’t at least recommend something for it.  But to have the firewall off?  A novice user, would hook up to a cable modem and off to the races to the internet, where anyone with knowledge of an exploit would have open access to the users brand new system.  To me, the firewall being off is completely unacceptable.  Needless to say I turned the firewall on.

Software

The software bundled with the machine isn’t what I would think they everyday user needs.  Sure Garage Band, iMovie, Photo Booth sound like a lot of fun, but outside of internet and email, the Mac isn’t what I would call productive and useful.  Maybe the majority of Mac users enjoy adding another $200 – $300 dollars for Microsoft Office for Macs to their enormous cost of buying the laptop in the first place.  Not me.  Thankfully a good chunk of my freeware is Mac capable.  And what I couldn’t find on my list I was able to find in the AppStore that is included on the Mac.  So far, I haven’t had to spend a penny on software.  Though not all of my tools are on here yet.  I’m still searching.

Installing software is easier than I had expected.  There seems to be 3 different install types, but they all are easy and things have so far, just worked.  That’s a hell of a bonus for something that up until now was completely foreign to me.  Will a normal user be able to do it?  For the most part I think they could actually.  I didn’t have to do any research really, just follow the pretty pictures or instructions.

Warcraft

I know that games are a somewhat lacking feature of the Mac.  WoW works out of the box, which is cool.  But I didn’t expect the bonuses I found.  Turns out that most games, if you want to record what you do in them, you have to use a third party app to “capture” what is in game.  Such as Fraps or WeGame.  As I was tweaking the settings to my liking, I found that WoW for Mac has a built in application to use Quicktime to record what you do in game and do so in H.264 format.  Nice!  Then I saw that they also had in-game controls for using iTunes while playing.  Something I wish I had for WinAmp in Warcraft on my PC!  I have yet to play with either of these features though.

Of course as I said before, WoW looked stunning on the Mac.  So much deeper and rich than it is on my PC.  The boss thinks it’s the display that does it.  I’m wondering if it’s the AMD video they use on the Mac.  As I have strictly used Nvidia for my PC.  Hmmm… Some research will have to be done to find out.

Other Things of Note

The power cord is super cool.  It’s modular so you can change the plug out for something that would work in European countries.  It’s also magnetized at the connection to the MacBook so it just clicks itself into place without nearly any effort and can break away easily if the user inadvertently gets up and walks off with it plugged in!

It is heavier than most laptops.  But it’s because of the aluminum body and the battery cells being much larger.

There is no vent holes for the CPU/GPU to breathe from.  I’m only guessing they use the body as a giant heatsink.  It gets warm but not nearly as hot as my Sony did.

Conclusion

Well I’m far from concluded on Macs.  End story is I own one now.  I’ll keep you up to date as to my experiences with it.  So far, it’s not as bad as I thought it would be and certainly easier than I expected.  There’s a lot of little things I have yet to get into.  I will say that the image you see in the corner of this post I edited on the Mac.  Wow, word count for this post is 1836.

And for you Mac Weenies, I dedicate this song to you.

All Trek stories are essentially the same…

I loved Star Trek as a kid and I enjoy the new movies as well.  Not much of a Deep Space Nine or Captain Janeway fan.  I barely got into the Second Generation.  From time to time perhaps.  The short lived series “Enterprise”, was thankfully short lived.  I liked Kirk and his original brood of marauders.  However, today when I logged into our server, as always it gives me some random tidbit or joke.  Today’s quip got me thinking that, “Yeah.. All the episodes do sort of end up the same way.”.  You read and tell me if you don’t see the obvious similarities.

Question: How many members of the U.S.S. Enterprise does it take to change a light bulb?

Answer: Seven.  Scotty has to report to Captain Kirk that the light bulb in the Engineering Section is getting dim, at which point Kirk will send Bones to pronounce the bulb dead (although he’ll immediately claim that he’s a doctor, not an electrician).  Scotty, after checking around, realizes that they have no more new light bulbs, and complains that he “canna” see in the dark.  Kirk will make an emergency stop at the next uncharted planet, Alpha Regula IV, to procure a light bulb from the natives, who, are friendly, but seem to be hiding something.

Kirk, Spock, Bones, Yeoman Rand and two red shirt security officers beam down to the planet, where the two security officers are promptly killed by the natives, and the rest of the landing party is captured.  As something begins to develop between the Captain and Yeoman Rand, Scotty, back in orbit, is attacked by a Klingon destroyer and must warp out of orbit.  Although badly outgunned, he cripples the Klingon and races back to the planet in order to rescue Kirk et. al. who have just saved the natives’ from an awful fate and, as a reward, been given all lightbulbs they can carry.  The new bulb is then inserted and the Enterprise continues on its five year mission.

Things that make you go hmmmm.

Unbound

And I call this Gamers Den…..

Silly me, haven’t even mentioned games since the change.  Haven’t yapped about Warcraft for a while at all.  Mostly because my attention is pulled in a different, less happy direction.  {shakes head briskly to regain focus}  And my new education of learning to use Mac OS X.

My friend Edain, started playing WoW again as he says, “it’s more relaxing and I can get things done”.  I’ll leave that to anyone’s interpretation but all in all it’s a good thing for me.  He’s known mainly as Ashelar in WoW, so I hope I don’t cause too much confusion for my reading audience (the five of you out there whom I appreciate to no end for your devoted support – feel free to use the comments – hint hint).

So yeah, I’m in his guild Unbound.  WoW is going terribly slow for me.  It’s no ones fault.  Just either haven’t felt like playing due to things at home or lack of people on to play with.  I have met some nice folks since the move.  So as far as games go, I think I’ve found a home.  Now… to find a home…

Life is Simply Mactastic

Just moments ago, I opened the white box, and gently removed the brushed aluminum unibody of my MacBookPro.  With curious wonder I lifted the lid and pressed the enticing power button.  A white light shined upon me with the sounds of digital angels cried out in happy accord.

It’s like all my sins have been forgiven.  The weight of life’s burdens have been lifted from my shoulders.  I now understand and comprehend the astral celestial enlightenment that is the holiness of Mac ownership.

From this day fourth, I shall no longer consume fattening fast food.  Only Panera‘s, Bonefish Grill‘s and other prestigious chef driven  establishments shall caress my palate.  Starbucks, Tropical Smoothie Cafe‘s and expensive wines are the only beverages I shall ever seek to enjoy to quench my thirst for this new heavenly lifestyle.

All public places I go, will have open free Wi-Fi where I and my Mac can proudly be seen together in perfect harmony.  Where we together shall check over my growing stock options on the open trades of the world.  Read CNN, the Washington Post and check in on all the hottest social websites while I synchronize my iPhone.  And people will immediately recognize and respect me because they know I am better than those foolish souls who failed to grasp the omnipotence that is Mac ownership.

I suddenly understand without knowing why, that all PC users are losers and should be swept from this earth along with all their horrible internet infecting viruses.  PC users are the viruses.  This world shall not obtain perfection until they are long extinct for our motherly planet.  Then yay truly the heavens can bless us with Steve’s love.

Once everyone is using Mac’s the world can then become the heaven that has been promised to us for so long.  Rainforests will heal and flourish.  Natural disasters will cease.  All men will become handsome, rich and sensitive.  All women will become attractive, sensuous and intelligent.  The ozone layer will recover and all the worlds pollution shall vanish into usable energy and fuel.

I shall go forth at once and trade my Kia in for an energy efficient Prius as suddenly I see clearly now that I wish to no longer to grow old and die of natural causes.  But to die doing 90 on the highway in an uncontrollable automobile while colliding head on with family filled minivan.

Will the real Denver Fowler…

Please stand up!

Well in this case, all three of us would stand up.  Yes kiddies, even though I have a somewhat unusual first name, I manage to share it with apparently thousands of others.  However, what would be the odds that there is not only one, but two other fellas who not only share my first name, but my last one as well!  What is my name you ask?  Why it’s Denver.  Denver Fowler to be precise.  Well, to set me apart from the others, it’s Denver Allen Fowler.

Then there is Denver Fowler the British Palaeontologist.  Very nice man indeed.  I’ve chatted with him via email on a few occasions.  I even liked him enough to give him DenverFowler.com.  Rather successful individual, has been published a couple of times and has a few articles mentioning him.

And there is Denver Jade Fowler, who goes by Denver Jade.  Another talented Denver who is a singer, song writer, actor and I understand he does some teaching as well.  You can find out more about Denver Jade at the Internet Movie Database and his band site The Jaded.  As well as he has his own personal website DenverJade.com.  I’ve only emailed him twice I think, but seems nice enough.

Sadly that leaves me as the guy who makes pretty websites.  Though to be honest, in my earlier days, I think I was better looking ;)   See for yourself.

From Left to Right: Denver Jade, Me in 1994, Denver Fowler (the Brit)

Now… Did my Dad get busy?  (long story) Or….

Boggles the mind a bit doesn’t it?
